This milestone is on Headington Road, Oxford, towards the top of Heading hill, and has the Milestone Society National ID OX_LW53.

  1. This fine stone may be not the 18th century stone it looks like. The 18/early 19c milestone was at the bottom of Headington Hill less than half a mile from St Clements tollgate and only a little further from Magdalen Bridge and the former Eastgate, so it could well be a mid 19th century replacement of an earlier stone. It is differently shaped from the others in the series. Of course it is not on the A34 but the London to Oxford turnpike via High Wycombe, previously the A40 until the northern bypass was built
