Who walked the seven miles from Woodstock to Oxford along the turnpike road on 21 March 1797 to avoid being recognised at Woodstock boarding the stage coach on her way to meet her Oxford don and clerical lover at Henley-on-Thames, never to darken the door of the family home again? (This is a true historical event not from a Jane Austen novel, though she would have known of the story and perhaps made use of it in Mansfield Park.)
Comment if you think you know the answer (which is to be found in A Spencer Love Affair by Allan Ledger). The book’s title is a massive clue.
