The decision was taken in 1991 to build a new privately funded motorway to alleviate congestion on the M6, and on other existing roads: the A5, A38 and A446.
Midland Expressway Ltd were awarded the concession to build and manage the M6 Toll, investing £1bn of private funding; the road opened in December 2003.
Today over 150 people are employed, dedicated to running the road ‘safely and smoothly.’
